The Sun and its Sunflower
The sunflower opens its’ peddles for then suns warm embrace. With confidence it blooms and blossoms fully beautifying the world with its colors. Even when the clouds cast their shadows and the rain falls heavy, it still stands knowing that the sun will come again and dry away the droplets weighing down its stems. Rooted deep it pushes upward while gravity pulls it down. Fighting all the elements to continue being the sunflower it was born to be. Even when the wind picks up and thunder strikes with lightning bolts. The sunflower stays right where it is. Holding its promise to thrive no matter the weather. The sun knows of all the struggles the sunflower has to endure just to see it because when it glistens over the horizon the weighted sunflower stands tall. Trying to reach its beams of warm light. In those brief moments, everything is perfect, and the world sits quietly relishing in the moment of complete peace.
The sunflower knows no other way of life and never questions its challenges for this is the way of the sunflower’s existence. To endure the weather for the brief moments of bliss.
There was a day though, after a specific storm that the sunflower asked the sun to stay longer. It was tired and really enjoyed its rest.
The sun took a pause and held space for this little flower; it warmed it up just a little longer. The flower grew taller, it’s peddles started to dry up from the rain. The roots of the sunflower stretched deeper. It was beautiful and bright, but suddenly it caught fire and began to burn. Each peddle started to wither and shrivel up. Never once did the sunflower think that the sun, in all its amazing light could be bad for it. All the days of heavy rain and blistering cold breezes, all it hoped for was the sun. It never basked this way in the water or the wind.
The sun took notice and began to set so the sunflower could heal under that blanket of darkness. The night was longer than usual, for the sun stayed away. Their relationship never felt this way, with the distance and the darkness, the sunflower began to pray.
To the sun it apologized for asking it to stay, for making the sun feel as if the damage to its peddles was the cause of the suns delay. After the darkness came the rain. The sunflower felt its peddles cooling, felt the burns soften and the soil loosen. But the sun did not come back after the rain. There was now too much water for the roots of the sunflower to stay stuck in the place the sun left it, where they would always meet. The water turned into a river and quickly followed the wind. Pushing down the sunflower under the rushing river pulling out its roots. Off the sunflower floated far and farther from its place.
The commotion of reaching the ocean unaware of the ground beneath. The sunflower let the water take it, spreading whatever peddles it had left to stay afloat. The darkness and the wind followed. No sun in sight.
Surrender came over the sunflower accepting its fate. Until the wind and the water washed it up onto a beautiful garden next to trees and other sunflowers. The sunflower lay on new soil surrounded by new flowers. The soil was a little softer, yet there were other roots for the sunflowers roots to hold onto. The other sunflowers wove their roots together and helped ground their new friend. The sunflower managed to begin to reach once more for the sky.
Feeling the stability of the roots beneath it, the sunflower began to rise again. Trying to spread the few peddles left. Once more looking up at the sky. The clouds began to clear and from far away, there was a little glimmer of the light the sunflower knew all too well peaking carefully through.
There it was! The sun shined above the field glowing as it saw its little sunflower. A little withered were its peddles but some new ones had begun to take the place of the ones lost. There it stood still beautiful with a stronger stem and longer roots surrounded by flowers and trees providing just enough shade for the sun to stay a little while.
So, there they were the sun with its sunflower after all the rain and wind. <3
