Environment is everything

I used to think I could write anywhere. Coffee shops, trains, waiting rooms - didn’t matter. Just needed a laptop and some headphones, right?

Wrong.

Well, not entirely wrong. I can write anywhere. But I write better in certain spaces. And that’s not some precious artist thing - it’s just… true.

My desk faces a window. There’s a plant (barely alive, but hanging in there) and a candle I never light because I’m afraid of burning the place down. There’s a specific playlist I put on. There’s a ritual.

And when I sit down in that space, with those conditions, my brain knows: okay, it’s writing time.

Environment is everything because it’s not really about the physical space. It’s about the signal you send to yourself. It’s about creating a container for the work.

Some people can create that container anywhere. I admire them. But I’m not one of them.

And that’s okay. I’ve stopped fighting it. Now I just make sure the plant gets watered (sometimes) and the desk stays clear (rarely) and when I sit down here, the words come easier.

Environment is everything because we are not separate from our surroundings. We’re part of them. And they’re part of us.
